How Long Does It Take To Become A Hafiz Or Hafizah?

It can take anywhere from 6 months to 5 years to become a hafiz (someone who has memorized the entire Quran) depending on individual learning capacities and time availability. Those with excellent memory retention and 4-5 hours daily to spare can memorize the entire Quran in 5-6 months. If you can commit 2-3 hours daily, you can accomplish this in a year. Slow learners or those with limited time can expect the memorization process to take 2 to 3 years.

For beginners, converts, and older individuals, we recommend a more leisurely pace, taking 4 years or longer to memorize the Quran. It’s important to pay close attention to Tajweed (the rules of Quranic recitation) and to understand each Surah (chapter) as you learn. Revision is mandatory at every step of your journey so to successfully become a hafiz or Hafiza, revise your lessons daily twice, thrice or even more.
